North Coast Swim Club receives $1,000 donation from the Madeline Malia  The North Coast Swim Club has announced a contribution from the Madeline Malia Robbins Memorial Fund, a $1,000 scholarship to aid swimmers with financial need. “The Madeline Malia Robbins Memorial Fund was started in February 2009 to remember and honor 5-year-old Madeline Robbins,” said Madeline’s mother, Taeryn Robbins. “It is meant to be an advocacy for childhood opportunity. Madeline loved living. She was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer just after turning 4 years old. Until that point in her life, she was healthy and was enjoying the new role of being a big sister.” “During her time in and out of the hospital, she continued to live in the moment,” she continued. “She loved to dance, and she loved to swim. When she discovered how to hold her breath, the magical and peaceful world of being under water made it almost impossible to get her out of the pool. Our hope in giving this scholarship is for another child to enjoy the freedom of being in the water, as Madeline did when she was here.” The scholarship money will provide two swimmers with monthly dues for up to one year. For swimmers, or potential swimmers, interested in joining the competitive year-round team, or for information, email the North Coast Swim Club at ncsc97103@ yahoo.com or come and talk to the head coach, Amy Emmett, weekday evenings on the pool deck at the Astoria Aquatic Center, 1997 Marine Drive.
