FOREST GROVE - Nervous speakers took to the stage for the first time Saturday at the Forest Grove Novice Tournament. Neah-Kah-Nie High School Novice Speech Team brought home the first-place trophy from the six school meet.

Individual winners were:

Poetry - senior Daniel Lee, first place

After Dinner Speaking - freshman Bryant Sheldon, first, and sophomore Theo Hill, second

Duo - freshmen Mark Beebe and Lucas Landry, first

Radio - sophomore Emily Nason, first

Impromptu - freshman Cody Folkema, fourth

Interpretation - Bryant Sheldon, first

Oratory - sophomore Lacy Phillips, first

Prose - freshman Cameron Dubois, first, freshman Jeff Edgington, second, and freshman Shanna Running, third.

Other Neah-Kah-Nie speakers placed first and second in at least one of their three rounds, adding to the team win. Freshman Eisha Castro competed well in Interpretation, and freshmen Sara Bisogni and Kimberly Koops-Wrabek placed high in their Prose rounds.

The next tournament is Oct. 9 at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham. Neah-Kah-Nie will host a local tournament Oct. 30. Adult volunteers are needed to act as judges for both tournaments. Those interested should contact Holly Lorincz (503) 355-2272.
