An independent film that's been blowing audiences away in Portland, Seattle and Eugene is coming to the Columbian Theatre Friday, June 4.
Filmed in Portland, "What the #@?&! Do We Know?" is described as "a layman's guide to quantum physics" - part documentary, part story and part elaborate visual effects and animations. The protagonist, Amanda, played by Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic "Alice in Wonderland" experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what most consider to be normal, waking reality.
The 14 top scientists and mystics interviewed in documentary style serve as a modern-day Greek chorus, acting as hosts who live outside of the story and comment on the actions of the characters. They also introduce the great questions framed by both science and religion, which divides the film into a series of acts. Through the course of the film, the distinction between science and religion becomes increasingly blurred.
"What the #@?&! Do We Know?" is not rated, but Columbian Theatre owner Jeanine Fairchild estimated it would probably receive an "R" rating for "a little bit of sex and some language." The theater is located at 1102 Commercial St. in Astoria. For more information, visit www.whatthebleep.com
