SEASIDE - The 8th Annual Seaside Chowder Cook Off, presented by Boyd Coffee Company, will challenge chowder fanatics again this fall from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center.

Professional chefs will show off their best chowder recipes as they compete for cash awards and bragging rights. Each booth will offer clam chowder samples in either a New England or Manhattan style variety, or seafood chowder samples.

Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children ages 3 to 12. The cook off is a charitable event with proceeds benefiting Loaves and Fishes and Women's Resource Center of Clatsop County.

Competitors are from all over Oregon and Washington. Participants this year include chefs from the following restaurants:

• The Shoalwater Restaurant at the Shelburne Inn in Seaview, Wash.

• Norma's Ocean Diner in Seaside

• Gunderson's Cannery Cafe in Astoria

• The Wayfarer Restaurant at the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach

• Moby Dick's Seafood and Spirits in Newport

• Baked Alaska in Astoria

In addition to the chowder cook off's chef competition, the event features performances throughout the day by Northwest jazz and Latin jazz musicians, including the Mary Kadderly Group, the Bobby Torres Ensemble and Park Avenue. Attendees will also have a chance to win door prizes. The cook off will also feature a children's activity center. For the adults, Willamette Valley Vineyards will be offering samples of its full line of wines, and Pacific Rim Brewing, Inc., will offer their microbrews.

To accompany the chowder, wine and music, the Western Culinary Institute's Chef Christian Haldeman will demonstrate "Fall Vegetable Carving" three times throughout the day of the cook off.

The Seaside Chowder Cook Off draws chowder lovers from all over the Pacific Northwest. The tradition was started as a way for seafood chefs, professional and amateur, to demonstrate the skill and precision that goes into preparing chowder.

The following organizations have donated in-kind services or door prizes to the chowder cook off: Big Graphics, B&B Print Source, The Computer Store, Wadsworth Electric and Hazelnut Growers of Oregon/Oregon Orchard.
