Get your dancing shoes on, the SEASIDE ELKS LODGE, 324 Avenue A, is hosting an old fashioned endurance contest, a “DANCE ’TIL YOU DROP” MARATHON at 8 p.m. May 18. The Ear is warning you way ahead of time because May 3 is the deadline to register for a spot on the dance floor by calling Rich Small at 503-717-5084, or emailing him at May 3 is also the deadline to order dinner tickets.

Pictured, some bedraggled dancers from a competition in the 1920s, when dance marathons were all the rage. One Spokane, Wash., show closed after 1,638 hours (yes, that’s almost two months). However, the events were so debilitating to the participants that several cities began banning them. Everything you never wanted to know about “corn and callus carnivals” can be found at

The Seaside “bunion derby” will feature music of the 1970s, and the last couple standing wins the prize (the amount depends on how many couples register). They need a minimum of 30 couples, and it costs $10 per person to enter.

During the marathon, dancers have to keep those feet moving at all times, and if they leave the dance floor for any reason, a monitor will tag along. Think you can take it? Sign up and find out.
