The River Theater's board of directors is asking arts supporters for help funding its Artist Poster Commission.

Two years ago, the River instituted a new tradition of commissioning artists to design the publicity posters for the major seasonal productions at the theater. The purpose was to give local artists greater exposure while capitalizing on one segment of community talent to publicize another group of community talent, and to create a series of publicity posters for each season that had continuity so patrons could collect River production posters.

This year, at the last minute, the nonprofit theater lost its funding source for the Artist Commission. Board members are working on federal and corporate grants to fund the project in the future, but the lengthy process will not be complete for this season. In the interim, the board needs to raise $1,200 to fund four publicity posters for the 2004-05 season.

Donations of any size will be rewarded with donors' names appearing in the program for each major River Theater production as Artist Grantors, and in the receipt of an artist print of each poster for the entire season. Donations are also tax deductible.

To provide support for this program, call Heidie Johnson, River Theater manager, at (503) 338-7487, or e-mail
