For the first time in Cannon Beachs history, the city will be represented in Portlands Starlight Parade May 31.
An illuminated sandcastle float, honoring the Sandcastle Days 50th anniversary this year, was accepted among 100 illuminated entries for participation in the parade, according to Eric Johnson, director of the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce.
The Starlight Parade is part of Portlands Rose Festival event. It features funky and eclectic fun for 250,000 spectators. The parade is broadcast from 9 to 11 p.m. May 31 on FOX channel 12
Built by community members and Coaster Construction, the float is a 14-foot-tall replica sandcastle made of concrete tubing and wood, and painted with a sand-colored finish. The float will be illuminated with rope lighting and towed by Duane Johnson Real Estate.
We are proud of this opportunity to be featured in the parade and get the word out about our 50th anniversary, said committee Chairwoman Debbie Nelson.
