LONG BEACH, Wash. - Dig this: Novices to masters will be awarded prizes of up to $1,500 during the 22nd annual SandSations Festival in Long Beach, July 21 and 22.
Registrations will be accepted from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the north end of the Boardwalk at the Bolstad approach. T-shirts will be available for purchase at that time. Free sand sculpting lessons will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday.
On Saturday, competitors should check in for their plot assignments from 11 a.m. to noon. Construction takes place from 12:15 to 5:15 p.m., with low tide at 5:03 p.m.
There are plenty of other activities for families to enjoy while you're strolling around the construction areas. The fourth annual Sand Flea Pet Parade takes place at 12:30 p.m., where anyone can bring a favorite animal buddy and compete for prizes and fame. All pets must be leashed and kept out of the sculpting pens.
The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be at this year's event, auditioning young singers for their well-known jingle. The Long Beach Kiwanis Club will provide free hot dogs (donations are appreciated).
The sand sculpting winners will be announced at 6 p.m., with prizes for first, second and third place in family, novice, intermediate and masters divisions, plus awards for children, people's choice, mayor's choice and judge's choice.
