Astoria High School freshman Steven Mortensen and Scout Troop 628 of Astoria recently took on the project of updating the Warrenton-Astoria Head Start Playground. Mortensen, whose parents are Reed and Diana Mortensen, of Astoria, took it on as his Eagle Scout project.

With his friends and family, Mortensen hauled and spread bark chips, power-washed play structures and performed minor repairs to ensure playground safety. The work continues this spring as the lawn areas are reseeded and the children's garden boxes are planted.

Says Rochelle Coulombe, center manager for Warrenton-Astoria's Head Start program, "This project was planned and organized by the scouts who participated. Our thanks goes to them and the other volunteers."
