The musical "Li'l Abner" opened on Broadway Nov. 15, 1956 and ran for 693 performances. Directed and choreographed by Michael Kidd, the show featured music by Gene de Paul and lyrics by Johnny Mercer (who also teamed for "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers").

Al Capp's comic strip has hit the silver screen twice, as a wacky comedy in 1940 and in the musical version in 1956, starring much of the Broadway cast.
