A frequent guest on Oprah, HGTV and The Today Show, McAlpin will show participants how to pack smart for airport security, travel essentials for any trip, packing the perfect carry-on bag and smart tips for cruises.

Workshops will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28 and 9 and 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 1 at AAA North Coast, 135 U.S. Highway 101 S. Seating is limited, so reservations are encouraged by calling (503) 861-3118 or e-mailing northcoast@aaaoregon.com

When McAlpin left home shortly after graduating from Oregon State University for an unpaid babysitting position aboard the TSS Fairsea, the Astoria native knew it was the perfect opportunity to visit new and exotic lands while pursuing a career in world travel. That six-month "job" resulted in 12 years with Princess and Holland America Cruise Lines, visits to 67 countries and 98 passages through the Panama Canal.

Aboard cruise ships, she assisted passengers with all aspects of their accommodations and regularly noticed that while the majority of vacationers were having the best times of their lives, some suffered some miserable periods of time. Cruises, extended vacations, short getaways and even brief business trips, she figured, should be remembered with fondness, not disappointment because "everything went wrong." While conducting packing seminars aboard ship, she found that memorable, fun-filled vacations started early in the trip-planning process.

Purchase $75 worth of merchandise from AAA's Travel Store and receive a free copy of McAlpin's book.
