Anandi performs at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 at the Voodoo Room, 1102 Marine Drive in Astoria. With a versatile voice, both smoky and sweet, Anandi manages to sound as brightly polished as a new penny while keeping her soul intact. Shades of Rickie Lee Jones, Sheryl Crow and other righteous ladies peek through, but it would appear Anandi has her own self wired tight. Cover is $5.
Summer Darling takes the stage at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11 at the Voodoo Room. The songs of Summer Darling are gentle and sadly reassuring with the echo of lessons learned about life, love and opportunity. "Southern Drawl," off "What's Done is Done, reminds you that no matter how far you travel and no matter why you left, home will always be that achingly sweet memory. The dual vocals at the end of this track are the best part of the whole album. If you remember the band Hazel, you'll hear some similarity in the harmonies.
Lead singer Ben Heywood has an engaging rather than beautiful voice. It isn't perfect (nor are the female backing vocals), which is all the more reason it is so engaging. It's real and right there in front of you. His lyrics are sad without sap, sweet without excessive sugar, warm without whining. There will be a $5 cover charge.
