KAREN GILL, local Boy Scout coordinator, passed this idea on to TOM GRIMM at The Daily Astorian, and he passed it on to the Ear: Why not turn pallets, which are often thrown out or burned, into gardens? Why not, indeed.

Karen also sent along a link with simple detailed instructions – not written in gardenese – on how to a make a pallet garden, and you can find it here: http://tinyurl.com/pallet garden

It’s not as crazy as it might sound. Use a pallet that’s in good condition and has been heat treated, not fumigated. You might even find one right here at The Daily Astorian, as they get put outside by the dumpster.

You’ll need lots of potting soil, some landscaping fabric, a staple gun, sandpaper and, of course, plants. As RUDYARD KIPLING sagely said, “Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful,’ and sitting in the shade.”
