Landslides have caused numerous delays recently in passenger and freight rail along Puget Sound, between Seattle and Everett. It turns out the winter of 2012-2013 has been one of the worst on record for landslide destruction.

Gus Melonas is spokesman for BNSF Railway. He confirms it's been a bad year for slides. ??

"This would rate right at the top -- definitely top 5 as far as slide after slide -- some feel top 3." ??

That's the top three worst years for landslides in BNSF's recorded history. The company has been keeping a tally almost 100 years, since 1914.

The federal government has provided $16 million to fund landslide reinforcement at 6 sites along the problematic stretch of railroad along Puget Sound.
