AARP will conduct three eight-hour driver safety classes in September.

A class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 7 and 8 in Tillamook at the Tillamook Bay Community College, 4301 Third St. To register, call (503) 842-8222.

The second class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13 and 14 at Clatsop Community College, 1653 Jerome Ave. in Astoria; and the final class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17 and 24 at the CCC Seaside Extension Center, 1455 N. Roosevelt Drive in Seaside. To register for either of these two classes, call (503) 338-2408 Monday through Thursday.

Preregistration is required. The cost is $14 or $12 for AARP members. Seating is limited. Tuition is payable on the first day of class, and checks should be made payable to AARP.

This class is designed for seniors age 55 and older but anyone can attend. Oregon State Law provides for a discount on auto insurance premiums for completing this course. Attendance at both sessions is required to receive a certificate of completion.

The course includes the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate a vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Attendees will learn about some adjustments to make to accommodate for common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time, and information will be offered on aggressive drivers, air bags, seat restraints and anti-lock brakes.

For those who have already taken this course, or a similar one, most insurance companies require that a refresher course be taken every three years to continue to receive the discount; or every two years for those who are age 70 or older.
