CANNON BEACH -- Residents here were hoping and hoping Sunday night as the Oscars TV broadcast went ahead that their neighbor Jim Reardon of Cannon Beach would be honored.

He and Andrew Stanton were nominated for best original screenplay for "WALL-E."

But, alas, when comedian-presenter Steve Martin opened the envelope, he revealed that Dustin Lance Black had won the category for his screenplay of the Sea"Milk," the story of San Francisco politician Harvey Milk.

But any disappointment changed to delight just minutes later when "WALL-E" director Stanton was called up to accept the Academy Award for best animated feature film.
