Election filing deadline is TuesdayWith the Aug. 24 filing deadline almost upon us, election fever is sweeping through local cities.
There's actually a three-way race in Astoria, where KC McGee, Russ Warr and Michael Zametkin are all vying for the Ward 4 seat on the City Council. That position, being vacated by Loran Mathews, represents the east side of town.
At the other end of the continuum, Astoria also has the only position that's going begging. No one has completed the filing process for the Ward 2 seat that Don Morden will vacate at the end of the year. The Ward 2 position represents Astoria's south slope.
In Warrenton, two out of three open seats on the City Commission are contested. Mark Kujala will square off against incumbent Jeff Hazen for position 1. Russ Farmer, who was appointed to Position 2 in 2002, faces a challenge from Terry Ferguson. Paul Rodriguez, position 3, is unopposed for another term. He currently serves as mayor.
In Gearhart, Carol Brenneman is challenging Ed Tice, who was appointed to Position 2 on the Gearhart City Council in May 2002. Preston Devereaux will face off against incumbent John Pincetich, who was appointed to Position 4 in October 2003. Mayor Kent Smith is unopposed for a fifth term.
Four candidates have filed for two positions in Cannon Beach, where council members are elected at large. They are Lois DuPey, Jay Raskin, John Williams and incumbent George Vetter, who was appointed to the council in 2003. Incumbent Betsy Ayres is not running for re-election.
In Seaside, the three incumbents whose seats are up for re-election all are running unopposed. They are Don Johnson, Stubby Lyons and Tim Tolan. Tolan was appointed in February 2003.
The deadline to file for all positions is Tuesday. Forms and information are available at city halls.
Election day is Nov. 2.
