The Astoria Police Department will spend this weekend focusing on dangerous drivers who speed, run stop signs and engage in other risky behavior. Starting Friday, extra officers will be on duty to provide stepped-up enforcement. The extra effort is aimed at reducing injury accidents over the busy weekend, when the Crab Festival is expected to increase the volume of traffic in town.

Sgt. Brad Johnston says the Astoria Police Department would like to remind motorists that driving requires the ability to perform many tasks at the same time and any amount of impairment is detrimental to the ability to perform those tasks. "If alcohol consumption is part of your plan," Johnston advises, "include a designated driver or take public transportation."

The overtime to provide these extra shifts is funded through the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
