The Seaside Chamber of Commerce has set up a practice pitch on Seaside Beach one block north of the Lewis & Clark Statue at the Turn-Around. The two goals were set up at the end of last week and were an immediate hit.

Alan Smiles, Executive Director of the Chamber commented, "We no sooner had the goals in place than people began forming pickup teams and playing games. It's a great indication for our upcoming Beach Soccer Tournament, June 5th and 6th. We hope area teams will use them for practice. It would be exciting if our local teams are winners in the tournament."

Beach Soccer is extremely popular on the East Coast and in Southern California but very new to Oregon. Due to the greater difficulty of playing on the sand the pitch or playing field is smaller than for field soccer. Teams are four to a side plus a goalie for each team. Full teams are ten members with unlimited substitutions.

The Seaside Tournament has divisions for adults and youth from age nine and up.

There are cash prizes for the adult division and a drawing among the youth teams to win a Beach Paragliding Tandem ride.

Cost for team entry to the tournament is $180.00. This is a reduction from the original cost of $350.00 thanks to a contribution from sponsors who wanted to provide "scholarship" assistance to help promote the sport on North Coast beaches.
