A pipe that burst early Tuesday morning flooded the basements of a law office at 1139 Exchange St. and Peace Lutheran Church, 565 12th St. It also flooded the church's parking lot, because the drain couldn't keep up with the water.

The cast iron pipe, which dated from 1924, had never given any trouble before, said Astoria Public Works Director Ken Cook. It broke at a point between the law office and the Senior Center at 11th and Exchange streets, he said.

The call came in at 5:35 a.m. and crews responded immediately, he said. They shut down the pipe, pumped the water out as fast as possible, and then replaced the damaged section of pipe, Cook said.

He said the Astoria Fire Department assisted with the pumping.
