CANNON BEACH - The Cannon Beach planning commission held a work session Tuesday to discuss parking and traffic issues.

"I think the city staff made especially good progress with traffic and parking this year," Chairman Don Hull said. "Staff really tried to anticipate the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial traffic by adding additional tour bus parking spaces."

During the work session the commission discussed three main issues for 2004:

• A study of "traffic-calming" ideas on Spruce Street south of Fir Street, where there were reports of speeding and congestion this summer.

• Parking difficulties at the intersection of Fir and Spruce streets.

• Short-term parking spaces at the north end of the business district near Hemlock Street.

The commission scheduled another work session at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to discuss these issues further before conducting a public hearing, Hull said.
