SEASIDE — Clatsop County police officers, families and friends will celebrate Peace Officer Memorial Week at 6 p.m. Monday, May 14, at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center.

The community is welcome to participate in the ceremony. National Peace Officer Memorial Week is May 13 through 19.

Last year in Oregon, three officers died while on duty. They were: Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter, Eugene police officer Chris Kilcullen and Oregon State correctional officer Buddy Herron.

In all, 166 law enforcement officers died in the United states, six more than in 2010 and 28 more than in 2009. Their names will be added to the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C. during this year’s memorial ceremony.

American flags will be lowered to half-staff on May 15 to honor the 19,000 law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.
