Get ready: the 2004 Clatsop County Fair is gearing up for a week of competitions, entertainment and good, old-fashioned fun.

The theme of the fair, "An old kind of feeling with a new kind of fun," highlights the fact that the fair is changing its organization and layout, but will still offer the same time-honored events and entertainment that fairgoers have grown to love.

She said that the Oregon National Guard will be offering some hands-on activities including the chance to climb in an armored personnel vehicle and a free rock-climbing wall. They will also be showcasing their armored vehicle launching bridge and two humvees.

There will be more interactive and educational activities for families to participate in. The Oregon Forestry Department and firefighters from all over the county will be participating. The Pacific Science Center will offer interactive booths as well as its "Super Cool" science show on stage.

The New Blues Brothers, a Blues Brothers tribute band, will take the stage on Friday at 7 p.m. This band is the highlight of the Clatsop County Fair's amphitheater line-up, which features other great performances including Michael Vallee, the Adam Craig Band, Bruce Smith and Whiskey Creek. All performances are family-friendly and start at 7 p.m.

"We got the best entertainment package we could get," Grant said.

On Saturday, the Logging Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Competitors will perform a range of activities including chopping, climbing and sawing large logs. Over 5,000 people packed the arena last year, according to Grant, so spectators this year are urged to come early.

The fair will still be offering events such as the carnival, the livestock competition, Muriel's Petting Zoo and all the different animals and other exhibits done by 4-H and Future Farmers of America members.

The fair runs Tuesday and s through Saturday, and opens at 9 a.m. daily. Parking is $2 and admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Children 6 years and under are free. For more information call the Clatsop County Fairgrounds office at (503) 325-4600.
