Clatsop County Environmental Health has two upcoming food handler classes that are open to anyone interested. One class will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at Clatsop County Health Department, 820 Exchange St.

A Spanish-language class will held from 7 to 8 p.m. June 8 at Clatsop Community College South campus, 1475 Roosevelt Drive in Seaside. The classes are open to people age 13 and older, and the fee is $10. Preregistration is not required.

The classes not only provide the certified food handler card required for food service workers, but also an opportunity to interact informally with a county environmental health inspector to better understand the reasons behind many of the required food safety rules.

The class will cover safe food handling practices, proper cooking and cold temperatures that prevent the growth of bacteria in food, how individually we can better prevent the spread of disease in foods, plus ways to maintain a clean, safe work environment where food is prepared and served.
