Early results of the Tuesday May 15 Primary Election in Clatsop County show incumbent Sheriff Tom Bergin leading in the five candidate race with 46 percent of the vote at 3,057. Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Jim Pierce has 27 percent at 1,827. Retired Deputy Bill Fuzia 669, Senior Deputy Mike Nelso 548,and Seaside Police Detective Steve Barnett 505.
Bergin expects a runoff vote in November with Jim Pierce.
"There will be a runoff in November," Bergin said. "But thats ok. This is the first step. We are doing our job."
Bergin said there are two factors that led to the runoff.
"There were five guys in the race diluting the vote and a very low turnout," he said. "Its just doing the math."

Jail ballot measure
Sheriff Bergin said the voters have spoken and the $14 million jail expansion measure will likely be defeated. "We have to listen to what the voters say," Bergin said. "But the fact is that we are releasing more inmates daily because of the jail conditions. I can understand that the $30 more a year might have been too much for some voters."
