Clatsop Community College will present a self-defense class for the ordinary citizen with no prior training. People will be taught how to get out of tight places, escape from holds and how to thwart a carjacker inside a vehicle.

The course emphasizes breath control, relaxation, movement and striking techniques from the Russian styles as well as Japanese small circle jujitsu finger and joint locking. The class is designed for all body styles and ages teen and older, and couples are welcome.

Classroom discussions cover proper 911 call procedures, conflict avoidance, awareness of surroundings and Oregon Use of Force laws. Instructor Mike Calog is a retired police officer with 35 years of martial arts experience.

Classes will be conducted from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning next week and running through Dec. 3, at the main CCC campus in Astoria.

Seating is limited and pre-registration is recommended at

www.clatsopcc.edu/schedule or by calling 503-338-2402 or 503-338-2408. There is a class fee of $75 for each participant. Direct inquiries to: Mary Kemhus-Fryling at 503-338-2408; mfryling@clatsopcc.edu
