CANNON BEACH - CoastWatch offers another opportunity to see the documentary, "Common Ground," about Oregon's ocean. The event, co-sponsored by Friends of Haystack Rock and partially supported by the City of Cannon Beach, takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. May 22 at the Cannon Beach Community Hall.

Oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer will talk about marine debris and tell how beachcombers can help scientists. Marine ecologist Cynthia Trowbridge will talk about what natural materials in the driftline can tell us about the ocean environment. Oregon Shores' Ocean Program Manager Robin Hartmann, who will show the film, will discuss the campaign for ocean conservation and marine reserves. Organizers offer a casual beachwalk afterward for those who would like to linger, ask questions and talk.

Members of CoastWatch literally watch the coast for the community, adopting a specific mile of Oregon coast and checking it quarterly to see how it's being used or abused, to notice unusual events such as dead birds or bamboo on shore and to track other development.
