Seaside's Gordon Olson competed in the Associated Powerlifting Federation's National Championships May 26 in Fresno, Calif., and returned with a world record.
Competing in the 50-54 Masters at 165 pounds, Olson broke the world record in the squat by lifting 606 pounds, breaking the old mark of 590.
Olson also benched 300 pounds and deadlifted 562. His total of 1,466 is a new world record for the age and 165-pound weight class.
Olson is a four-time world champion and also holds the world record of 601 pounds in the deadlift in the same class.
The World Championships will be held in Finland in October. Olson will compete in the West Coast Open, held in Newport in June.
Fun Shoot set for June 8-9
The Saddle Mountain Archers' Spring 3D Fun Shoot is set for June 8-9 at the SMA outdoor 3D range.
There will be 24 targets with two moving targets. It will take about 11/2 hours to go through the course, and participants may go through as many times as they like each day.
The June 8 shoot is scheduled for 9 a.m. to dark, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for June 9.
The cost is $15 for adults for two days, $10 for one day; youth 16-and-under shoot for free.
To get to the SMA outdoor range, turn left on Christians Road at milepost 5 on Highway 202, then go 11/2 miles to the check-in point.
Register for Paavo Nurmi Run/Walk
NASELLE, Wash. - It's time to register for the 5K, 3.1-mile, Paavo Nurmi Run/Walk, to be held as an opening event of the 11th biennial Naselle Finnish American Folk Festival. The event will be held in Naselle, Wash., beginning and finishing on the track at Naselle High School's Rueben Penttila Field beginning at 8 a.m. July 27.
The registration fee of $12 (before July 19) includes a run T-shirt. Race-day registration can be made but will not include a T-shirt.
This year's Paavo Nurmi Run will be a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society to support those on the FAFF committee who have gone through one of life's biggest challenges and come out winners. The FAFF welcomes any additional donation which one may wish to make in support of this cause.

Coed softball meeting held in Seaside
The Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District holds a mandatory organizational meeting for the Coed Adult Softball League at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Seaside Youth Center, 1140 E. Broadway.
The meeting is open to players wishing to enroll a team in the league or those interested in joining a team. At least one representative from each team is required to attend this meeting to be considered for the league. Teams with no one in attendance will be allowed in the league only if there is an open spot.
Points of discussion will include league fees, umpires, rules, fields, disciplinary guidelines and schedules. Rosters will also be distributed.

Cal Ripken players show off at tourney
KNAPPA - Teams in the 3A Cal Ripken hardball league will play in a viewing tournament in Knappa this weekend.
Games will be played throughout both days at Danny Patterson Field and the Knappa High School field. The public is welcome to watch the hardball action as players are selected for all-star teams.
Seattle man shoots hole-in-one
Brandon Johnson of Seattle, Wash. scored a hole-in-one Saturday at the Highlands Golf Course in Gearhart. Johnson aced the 130-yard 6th hole using a 6-iron.
