While planning their own food production, Teresa Retzlaff and Packy Coleman are also helping to launch the North Coast Food Web to connect growers with retailers and consumers and bolster local food delivery systems.
The nascent group met in February and is looking at getting nonprofit status to qualify for rural agricultural development grants.
"Clatsop County technically qualifies as a food desert," said Retzlaff. "There's so little food production going on in our county. ...We're looking at who's doing all the different pieces of local food production so we can do a better job filling gaps where no one is doing anything. ... We do think about food security because we are fairly isolated from the valley. We all know how easy it is to get cut off."
Some things she believes would help the local food movement here include a commercial kitchen for local growers to make value-added products like jam, salsa and pickles; a mobile farmers market that cuts down on individual travel costs, a regional slaughter facility; and better connections between food producers from Manzanita and Nehalem up to Astoria and southwest Washington.
