You pay the taxes. Why not help decide how to spend them?
The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners is looking for local residents willing to volunteer for various budget committees. The budget committees review and make recommendations to the board of commissioners about proposed budgets.
Each committee is made up of five county commissioners and five other local residents they appoint. This year, the county Budget Committee is scheduled to meet May 12, 13 and, if necessary, 14. Special district budget committees will meet May 13.
Seats are available on the following committees:
Clatsop County Budget Committee: There are three vacant positions. One calls for representation from District
2. Applicants must live in the area south of Warrenton to the center of Seaside and including the city of Gearhart. Another seat calls for representation from District
3. Applications must reside in the Miles Crossing, Jeffers Gardens, Lewis and Clark, Youngs River or Olney area or in Astoria east of Fifth Street, southeasterly of Denver Avenue and south of platted West Niagara. The third calls for representation from District
4. Applicants must live in the area that runs from the eastern portion of Astoria to the eastern border of the county, including Svensen, Knappa and Westport. All terms end June 30, 2006.
Rural Law Enforcement Service District Budget Committee: Two positions, both for full terms ending June 30, 2006. This is a special taxing district that provides law enforcement services to the rural part of the county. Applicants must live in the unincorporated area.
Westport Sewer Service District Budget Committee: Four positions are open, three full terms and one partial term ending June 30, 2005. Applicants must live in the sewer district.
Road District No. 1 Budget Committee: One seat is available, a three-year appointments. The road district funds road and bridge maintenance and projects in the rural areas. Applicants must live in the unincorporated area.
4-H and Extension Service District Budget Committee: Two positions, both terms ending June 30, 2006 Applicants can live anywhere in the county except for Cannon Beach, which is not part of the district.
Application forms for any of the appointments are available from the County Administrator's Office, 800 Exchange St., Suite 300, Astoria, or call 325-1000. Applications should be filled out and returned by Feb. 11 in order to be considered for an appointment.
