Laurie Kautz told the Ear that on March 16, Cub Scout father and volunteer firefighter Carl Brown arranged a tour of the Gearhart Fire House for the Cub Scouts of Seaside's Pack 540.

"Lt. Chad Sweet started the meeting by talking to our scouts about a little fire safety," Kautz said.

Firefighter Brown "entered the room wearing his full gear. The scouts were able to see and hear what a fireman entering a burning or smoke filled room would look and sound like, and why it was very important to never hide when a fireman comes to rescue them ... The scouts also learned the importance of having a family escape plan and meeting place for their home as well as anyplace they may camp."

The scouts then went outside and learned a bit about fire trucks. "They were each given a chance to run a fire hose, after which very few of them remained dry," Kautz noted. To top things off, the grateful scouts were treated to a short ride on the truck.
