THE DALLES, Ore. _ A Wasco County judge and the local district attorney are locked in a dispute that has slowed court proceedings in The Dalles.

The Dalles Chronicle reports that Wasco County District Attorney Eric Nisley has filed a motion to stop Circuit Judge Janet Stauffer from hearing any new criminal matters from his office.

That action followed Stauffer's recent dismissal of all charges against a teenage rape suspect, in a case in which she acted as both judge and jury.

Nisley says he believes that his office cannot have a "fair and impartial trial or hearing before the judge."

But the presiding judge for the Seventh Judicial District says Nisley is out of line, and in violation of previous efforts at mediation.

And Stauffer herself says that the DA's efforts are "unreasonable, costly and unfair, especially to victims and those accused of crimes."
