A driver safety program for senior citizens that may lead to a reduction in auto insurance premiums will be offered in Astoria.

The American Association for Retired Persons' Driver Safety Program, formerly known as "55 Alive," is a classroom driver refresher course for those age 50 and older. The course explains the changes that occur in vision, hearing and reaction time as drivers age and provides useful driving safety tips for handing these changes. The two-day class also covers rules of the road and local traffic problem areas.

The Astoria Senior Center, 1111 Exchange St., will host the class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Advance registration is required and class size is limited to 20 students. To register, call Fred Lundin at 325-0960.

Cost for the class is $10. Oregon law requires all auto insurance carriers to recognize people who take the class. Each student who finishes the course will receive a certificate of completion, which often results in a discount on his or her auto insurance premium.
