Astorians can pitch in this weekend to help make their town more attractive. Saturday and Sunday are Fall Cleanup Weekend, when everyone is encouraged to do his or her part - clean sidewalks, pick up trash, anything to help clean up the city.

There will be no charge at the transfer station off Williamsport Road for Astoria residents who are customers of Sunset Refuse & Recycling. Noncommercial and nonindustrial waste will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Vehicles must be no larger than a pickup truck, passenger car or passenger van; utility trailers will be accepted. There is a limit of two trips per day.

Because solid waste service in Astoria is no longer mandatory, this event limits free service to Sunset Refuse & Recycling customers because the costs are paid by surcharges to solid waste bills. Customers using the free service at the transfer station this weekend must present a Sunset Refuse & Recycling bill and a driver's license.

For information, call Cindy Maynard at the city of Astoria, 338-5173.
