SEASIDE — Julie Mespelt has just the prescription for staff and patients at Providence Seaside Hospital.

Mespelt started serving shots on Jan. 1 in her lobby espresso stand, Gigi’s Coffee. Her supplier, Longbottom Coffee, gave her training when she took over the business the business from Julie Jesse.

“She owns Café Latte in the Carousel Mall,” she said. “She was getting ready to focus more on the downtown store and asked me if I’d be ready to take this one over because I’d expressed an interest years ago. She asked me if it was time, and I said, ‘It’s time.’”

Mespelt worked for more than 30 years at TV station KATU in Portland. She helped produce shows, worked in the legal department and served as program director during her time at the station.

“This is my retirement job,” Mespelt said. “I grew up in Seaside and always knew I wanted to come home, but I wasn’t sure how that was going to happen, and when this came available I knew it was just the right thing.”

Mespelt likes the mix of staff and patients at the hospital.

The Providence people are the best, she said. “I couldn’t have chosen a better location.”

In addition to coffee, she serves pastries and other sweet treats. Her hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday.
