The Foster Grandparents Program is seeking volunteers to spend 15 to 40 hours a week helping students with reading and mathematics at local schools in Astoria, Seaside and Jewell. The goal is to help students, one-on-one, to become better readers and better students.

Applicants must be 60 years old or older, must meet the income guideline of $1,064 maximum per month for a one person household, or $1,460 maximum per month for a two person household, pass a background check, be in good health and enjoy children.

A nontaxable stipend of $2.65 per hour for each hour given will be paid to volunteers, as will a mileage reimbursement of $.35 per mile. Orientation, monthly in-service training, accident insurance and recognition of service will be provided.
