SEASIDE — A fire destroyed a garage and four cars and damaged a house early this morning.

Homeowners Daniel and Robin Christiansen escaped from the blaze at 33373 U.S. Highway 26. No injuries occurred. Damage was estimated at $400,000.

The Christiansens also own the Cannon Beach Bakery.

Firefighters from Seaside, Gearhart, Cannon Beach, Hamlet and Warrenton responded to the blaze, which went to a second alarm. A total of 35 firefighters worked at the scene and 14 other firefighters stood by in case of other calls.

The buildings and contents were insured.

Firefighters were able to control the fire before significant damage occurred to the house. However, they were hampered by a lack of hydrants in the area until they found hydrants about one-half mile away. They also used about 12,000 gallons of water stored in tanker trucks.

Seaside and Cannon Beach police, Medix ambulance, Pacific Power and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted. Highway 26 was closed for a short period and later opened to one lane of traffic.

The Clatsop County Investigation Team will look into the cause of the fire today.
