GEARHART - Students at three schools in the Seaside School District have walked their way to winning prizes in Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon's Move It walking challenge, held during the past school year.

Over the course of six weeks, students at Gearhart, Cannon Beach and Seaside Heights Elementary Schools collectively logged more than 35 million steps to win first, second and third place prizes of $2,500, $1,000 or $500.

To participate, students wore pedometers and recorded the number of steps they took for six weeks during the school year. The winning schools may use their prize money for any health-related program.

Because there are varying numbers of students attending each school, the top three winning schools were determined by the average number of steps each student took. Gearhart Elementary came out on top with a student average of 312,362 steps. Second-place winner Cannon Beach Elementary logged a student average of 265,359 steps. Seaside Heights Elementary crossed the finish line in third place with a student average of 255,720 steps.

Regence officials presented a check for $2,500 to the winning students at Gearhart Elementary School on June 13.
