Clatsop Community Bank and Gearhart By the Sea are the recipients of the 2013 Hall of Fame Business Awards.

Clatsop Community Bank opened in 2008 and since then has been heavily involved in the community, sponsoring the annual Ducky Derby for several years and providing support to organizations like Columbia Memorial Hospital, Clatsop Economic Development Resources and the Clatsop Community College Foundation, among others.

Bank employees have served on boards and committees of all of these organizations and are encouraged to share their time as volunteers and give back to the community.

Gearhart By the Sea was established in 1974 to manage four different homeowners associations; it rents out 85 of these condominiums for the owners on a nightly basis.

Throughout the years, Gearhart By the Sea has supported the local community by donating or helping out at several local charity events.

Many Gearhart By the Sea employees have attended local schools or have had children who attended them, and the company feels it is important to help out the schools in any way possible.

City Awards

Seaside Jazz Festival coordinators Ruth Johnson and Judy Shook will receive the Hall of Fame’s city awards for their efforts to bring a weekend of jazz to about 2,000 people in Seaside every year.

Johnson began as a volunteer band host when she worked as a city of Seaside employee. As a band host, she provided whatever assistance band members needed during the festival.

From then on, Johnson became involved, and now, she directs the effort.

But she doesn’t play an instrument.

Shook “discovered” the festival when she used the ticket of a friend who couldn’t go.

“I was hooked,” Shook said. “I thought I had died and gone to heaven.”
