CANNON BEACH - The Haystack Rock Awareness Program is looking for volunteers to train as interpreters and stewards of Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. They will be holding a New Volunteer Open House from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to give interested citizens an idea of how HRAP works, and what volunteers can do in support of the program.

Members of the Friends group and current volunteers will welcome visitors at this "drop-in" event in the Council Chambers at the Cannon Beach City Hall, located at 169 E. Gower St. Refreshments will be available, and door prizes awarded during this 4-hour event.

Volunteers do not need to be an expert in marine biology to volunteer at the Rock. On-the-beach training will start immediately, and opportunities to learn more at various seminars will be offered throughout the year.

For information, call Elaine Keling, volunteer coordinator at (503) 717-8788 or e-mail ( or go to (
