Local residents who want to help make the world a better place to live in may be interested in vacancies on Clatsop County citizen advisory committees. Applications are being accepted for openings on the Human Services Advisory Committee and the Commission on Children and Families.

The Human Services Advisory Committee advises the county's Health and Human Services department on needs for services for people with addictions, mental illness or disabilities, or physical disabilities. The group helps to evaluate the services. Members provide a link to the public through education and advocacy.

There are three vacancies on the Human Services committee. Two are for terms ending in February 2006, and the third for a term ending in February 2007.

The Commission on Children and Families focuses on bettering life for children and families. The commission is charged by state law to advise the county commissioners in developing a local community plan to foster community values and services that nurture children and families.

The vacancy is for a term ending in February 2007. While all applications will be considered, the Commission on Children and Families is particularly interested in recruiting from the Hispanic community.

Applications for vacancies are due in the County Administrator's Office no later than Aug. 12. Forms are available online at (www.co.clatsop.or.us) or from the administrator's office at 800 Exchange St., Suite 310, Astoria, or phone 325-1000.

The Board of Commissioners will make the appointments.
