Portland's eastbound Interstate 84 will be closed this weekend between Interstates 5 and 205. Construction crews will be repaving the road.
The freeway (also known as "the Banfield") closes at 10 p.m. on Friday. I-84 eastbound will re-open by 5 a.m., Monday.
Don Hamilton, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, said motorists should choose other routes to get around the city.
"This is going to create some significant disruptions throughout the metropolitan area this weekend, but a little planning ahead and everything should be in good shape. There are lots of alternative roads on the city streets to get through," he said.
Hamilton said this is one of the busiest stretchs of road in the state. On average, I-84 sees about 170,000 vehicles a day.
The pavement on the road has become seriously rutted. The last time it was paved was 11 years ago.
ODOT plans to close I-84 for three full weekends in the next two months to complete the paving job.
