John Seeley has relinquished his position as superintendent-principal of Jewell School and the Jewell School District.

The school board publicly accepted his resignation after an executive session Tuesday evening.

Director Carrie Thompson was absent, and the seat formerly held by Teri Greenwood remains vacant. But board chairman Karl Meier and directors Ann Samuelson and Oly Schockelt unanimously approved the resignation "according to the agreement signed May 2, 2007."

Interim Superintendent Jim Mabbott said the signed document becomes effective this afternoon. Then, "anybody who wants to make a public records request for the agreement may do so."

John Seeley and his wife, kindergarten teacher Laura Seeley, have been on paid leave since last fall, pending the outcome of allegations they mistreated their adopted teenage daughter. Both have filed motions to dismiss their indictments, and the case has been delayed.

District business manager Patti Drew has also been on paid leave for much of the school year, but there was no mention Tuesday of anyone's jobs other than the former superintendent's.

The Daily Astorian has filed a public records request for John Seeley's agreement. For more details about the deal, visit later today.
