Kathryn "Katie" Elizabeth Smith, 90, of Seaside, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, in Seaside.

She was born in Dallas, Ore., March 27, 1916, to Bertie and Ora Savery.

Mrs. Smith began school in Dallas and graduated from Grant High School in Portland.

She married Roy Edward "Smitty" Smith, her high school sweetheart, Feb. 20, 1941. He survives, residing in Troutdale.

The Smiths owned and operated the Fern Cafe in Tillamook until 1959. They moved to Seaside and owned the Seasider Hotel until 1964. They then moved to Portland and operated Smitty's Sagebrush Room and The Sandy Hut. In 1980, they returned to Seaside and purchased Captain Morgan's in Gearhart. Mrs. Smith worked seven days a week until March 31, 2004, when Captain Morgan's was sold and she retired at the age of 88.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, John Smith of Portland and Richard Smith of Gearhart; one daughter, Paula Gallo of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. June 6 at the Gearhart Golf Links.
