U.S. Rep. David Wu, today announced that the Knappa-Svensen-Burnside Rural Fire Protection District has been awarded a $32,373 federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase new safety equipment.
"Oregon's rural firefighters must be prepared and equipped for the larger geographic area they serve," Wu said. "I am pleased to announce this federal grant supporting those who dedicate their lives to protect others."
The district will use its $32,373 grant to purchase a breathing air compressor and fill station and new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus air canisters.
Currently, district firefighters often must drive approximately 20 miles to refill spent canisters. This new fill station will reduce potential delays and improve the district's ability to safely fight fires, leaders say.
"Let me express our gratitude for the grant made possible by Congress," said Fire Chief Paul Olheiser. "This will enable the Fire District to purchase equipment that would not have been possible without the federal funding."
The grant was awarded under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program by the United States Fire Administration, a division of the United States Department of Homeland Security.
