Both bridges on Labiske Road at Kissville will close to traffic at 3 p.m. today, the Clatsop County Public Works Department announced. The contractor, JAL Construction of Bend, will work non-stop to remove the existing bridge structures and install new concrete slabs so the bridges will reopen within the 48-hour maximum closure period allowed by the contract.

The Oregon National Guard had installed Bailey bridges as a temporary measure after the old bridges, made out of old rail cars, had deteriorated to the point it was unsafe for fire trucks and school buses to cross. The new bridges will also be wider, with 18-foot driving surfaces.

Clatsop County provides local match money for state and federal funds available through the Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation program. The Oregon Department of Transportation awarded the construction contract.
