SeaPort Airlines, the Portland-based airline provider recently selected to offer air service between Astoria, Newport and Portland, has hired John Lansing as its regional sales director for the Oregon coast.
Lansing joined the SeaPort team after spending several years in the financial services industry. Most recently he held the position of branch manager for the Astoria Wells Fargo Bank for five years. Lansing also spent time in the air transportation industry, working for TransWestern Helicopters in Scappoose.
"I'm excited to be working with SeaPort Airlines because I think it has a good business model," said Lansing. "It's an Oregon-owned startup that provides a niche in the industry, offering local commercial, charter and freight services."
Lansing's job will be to build local clientele for the freight and charter aspects of SeaPort's operation. This will involve working closely with the Port of Astoria, the City of Newport, both chambers of commerce and various local businesses to most effectively use these services.
Lansing noted that SeaPort will put a positive fingerprint on local economic development.
"Adding air service to a rural community in a tough economic time truly brings about a sense of optimism," he said. "Ups and downs are cyclical."
Lansing has a strong connection to the area. He has lived on and off in Oregon since 1971. He has houses in Hammond and Portland, Ore., and has served on boards in both communities. He currently serves on the Port of Astoria's Budget Committee.
Scheduled passenger air service between Astoria and Portland, and Newport and Portland, will begin on March 15. The project was funded through a ConnectOregon II grant, which provides funding for transportation projects through lottery bonds.
