The Clatsop County Clerk and Elections Office reminds the public that 5 p.m. Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote in the Sept. 16 Board of County Commissioners District 5 special election.

To be eligible to vote, you must be an Oregon resident, a U.S. citizen, and be at least 18 years old by Election Day.

You must update your registration if you move or change your mailing address, change your name, or wish to change your party affiliation. Those who are updating the name or address of their registration have until 8 p.m. Election Day to do so.

The election is open only to registered voters in Board of Commissioners District 5, which covers the southern county including Cannon Beach, Arch Cape, Elsie, Jewell, Hamlet and portions of Seaside. The special election was set after the May election results for the District 5 seat were invalidated because of a balloting error. The candidates for the position are Dale Barrett and Lianne Thompson.

Ballots will be mailed to eligible voters beginning Wednesday. If you believe you are an eligible District 5 voter and do not receive a ballot, contact the Clerk’s Office at 503-325-8511.

Voter registration forms are available at the Clatsop County Elections Office, 820 Exchange St., Astoria, second floor, as well as local U.S. post offices, public libraries or Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles offices. People may also register online with the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office Voter registration forms can also be downloaded from the “Clerk & Elections” page at For more information go to the Clerk & Elections page on the Clatsop County website.
