In 1874, the archbishop of Portland, the Most Reverend Francis N. Blanched, dedicated the first Catholic Church in Astoria. The Rev. John Hung Tran, recently installed as pastor, invites all parishioners and friends to come celebrate St. Mary, Star of the Sea’s 140th year anniversary as a Catholic Church on Friday, the Feast of the Assumption, at a bilingual Mass at 7 p.m. at the church, 1491 Grand Ave.

St. Vincent de Paul’s Food bank is in need of ground coffee, soup and instant potatoes. Located behind the church, the food bank is open from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to noon Friday and Saturday. Anyone interested in volunteering for this ministry may call 503 325-2007.

The 20th Annual St Vincent de Paul golf tournament is Aug. 22 at the Oregon City golf club. For information, go to
