CANNON BEACH After a enduring an early morning fire and a year out of business, Matt and Anita Dueber are ready to reopen their longtime Cannon Beach eatery, The Bistro.
With a target date to reopen this month, Matt Dueber said they are nervous and excited.
Fire destroyed the popular restaurant at 263 N. Hemlock St. the morning of July 12, 2012. It was deemed a total loss.
Despite the tragedy, Matt Dueber never thought about calling it a day, not after being in business for more than 25 years.
The plan from the beginning was always to rebuild, he said.
Merserelli Construction of Arch Cape undertook the rebuild in early spring 2013, and the Duebers began planning in earnest for a summer reopening.
Now, with the doors nearly set to swing wide for customers, Matt Dueber is more than happy with the results.
The builders have been great, and I love it, he said. Its still pretty empty at this point, but that changes a little every day.
While the Duebers worked hard to retain the feel and essence of the original Bistro, they also took the opportunity to add some new features. These include ADA accessible restrooms and a brick courtyard seating area.
The building next door is gone now, and the new courtyard gives us more seating, Matt Dueber said. It looks great.
The support of the community helped play a role in the rebuilding process, he said.
